La Duquesa & Manilva
La Duquesa is next to the old coastal town of Sabinillas, near the inland town of Manilva, a few kilometres west of Estepona and 30 minutes drive to Gibraltar. You’ll find there a modern collection of hotels, villas and apartment developments, centered around the golf course and also around the La Duquesa sports marina, which is rapidly enhancing its reputation and also.
If the Costa del Sol could be notionally split into two parts, the sensible location for the rip should be just west Estepona: Here, the pace of development has lagged a few years behind the rest of the coast.
The area itself is an organized mesh of large apartments, residential complexes with pools and gardens, excellent cafés, laid-back bars, exquisite restaurants and highly rated international schools. But it's outdoors where your days at La Duquesa become truly enjoyable. The sports marina is a haven for boating enthusiasts, while the La Duquesa Golf and Country Club is one of the region's most technically accomplished - and beautiful - courses. There are plenty of other golf courses nearby, as well as miles of white sandy half-deserted beaches, even in high season. Duquesa has some late night venues, but they're a little soulless and overpriced. Again, for the complete opposite, the tavernas and bodegas that are dotted around the town centre of Manilva are intriguing, and will let you enter into an Andalusian traditional night out.
Life here is laid-back, with just enough going on in La Duquesa itself, or nearby, to keep all ages pleased and fulfilled.
The Manilva’s town itself is rather small, to be found 3km inland from the coast and located toward the far (western) end of the Costa del Sol, beyond Estepona and a short drive from Sotogrande. Historically, the town grew thanks to agriculture; the surrounding hills provide fertile ground for some of the best grapes found in Spain.
If you’re looking for trendy or sophisticated lifestyle, Manilva might not be for you! If you’re looking for a place where simple pleasures are easier to appreciate when on holiday, if you’re the sort of person who enjoys a simple beer while sat on patio furniture in the sun overlooking the beach or if you're prepared to step back in time and get a great tan in the process, Manilva could be just the place for you.
