Despite being an interior village, as the municipality has no outlet to the sea, Ojén is included in the Western Costa del Sol. This is due not so much to its proximity to Marbella and Mijas, which it borders, as to the fact that it has almost the same climate and services as the most cosmopolitan area of Málaga. It is just a little farther away (10 kilometres), and thus comfortably insulated from the hustle and bustle of the coast. Ojén opens up onto the mountains like real gateway to Sierra de las Nieves Nature Reserve, winning the EU EDEN – European Destinations of Excellence Award in 2008.

The village of Ojén is kind of perfect postcard replica of a typical Andalucian white "Pueblo" expectedly known as one of Spain's most beautiful village with whitewashed houses lining narrow flowered streets and tidy squares all around you, mountain ridges beyond and with superb views to the sea. In fact the village is very dynamic with its weekly local market, annual feria but not only then; all year round, Ojén streets are lively with youngster's mixing with elders inhabitants besides tourists enjoying a slice of real Spain just at Marbella's doorstep.

The Ojén territory is rather vast and lies between the Sierra de la Nieves and Sierra Alpujata ranges on the north and stretches southward through the valleys. In the midst of these rugged surroundings the village unexpectedly appears, surrounded by countless orchards and market gardens that descend like a stairway to the valley floor.

La Mairena neighborhood is also part of Ojén while located 25 minutes drive from the village.
